Interleukin II: a new elixir of youth?

Interleukin II (IL 2) is a protein belonging to the immune system’s cytokine family and is composed of 153 amino acids. Cytokines are, in turn, proteins with a fundamental role in the growth functions and work of other cells of the immune system.

One of these cells is T lymphocytes, which have the function of protecting the body from infections and chronic diseases such as cancer. This happens because they destroy tumor cells and control the body’s immune responses. Now, IL 2 is in the news for a possible ‘elixir’ of youth.

An injection to neutralize Interleukin II could extend life by 25%

The possible relationship of Interleukin II with eternal youth is due to recent studies published by the specialized magazine Nature. This is research that has been carried out for several years by the Duke School of Medicine in Singapore. The publication in Nature indicates that by means of an injection placed in laboratory mice they managed to block the action of this protein. The content of the injection is an antibody that inhibits the functions of Interleukin II.

Thanks to this blockage, the metabolism and muscle functions were improved and the signs of aging were slowed down. The preliminary conclusion is that the life of these rodents was extended by 25%. In other words, it is the first study to demonstrate the relationship between IL 2 and the natural aging process. In fact, it is the main factor in the degeneration of cells over time.

Tests on humans are urgently needed

The scientists who are carrying out the research warned that it is essential to carry out tests on humans to verify their safety and effectiveness. Before talking about a definitive injection against aging or cellular degeneration, it is important to have sufficiently documented clinical trials.

Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys, general manager of Sonrisa Perfecta Dental, maintains that a crucial stage is still missing in this research. As is often the case in these cases, clinical trials with human beings can last several years before definitive conclusions are reached. After that, the next step would be the development of the drug, which must undergo various laboratory tests before being available.

This professional, considered one of the best dentists in Colombia, has a master’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Cartagena. Along with postgraduate studies in Implantology, Oral Rehabilitation and Dermo-aesthetic and Facial Medicine, she has managed to perfectly understand the function of Interleukin II. She states that the regulatory role of this protein on cellular function must be carefully analyzed by experts.

The main risk to be measured in humans is the incidence of this cytokine as a regulator of immune responses. In the opinion of the doctor, it is essential to have a complete knowledge of the genetic information of the protein to inhibit the incidence on aging. The objective of the next clinical trials must be to achieve this without sacrificing the regulatory capacity of the immune response.

Important recent background with Interleukin II

This is not the first time that the scientific world has set its sights on Interleukin II for medical purposes. Its use as a basic element for diagnosing celiac disease had already been suggested in 2019. The study was specifically designed to establish a link between the release of cytokines after the ingestion of gluten.

The research was focused on patients suffering from celiac disease and was led by scientists from two prominent organizations. These were the biotechnology company ImmusanT from the United States and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute from Australia. The aim of their work was to simplify the diagnosis of celiac disease through a simple blood test.

Until then, and even today, the diagnosis of this pathology is carried out through a combination of several tests. These include antibody tests in the blood and intestinal biopsies, added to specific genetic tests. This significantly delays the diagnosis even though the patient may suffer from severe and obvious symptoms.
