The spa-type clinic Sonrisa Perfecta Dental is incorporating inhaled sedation with nitrous oxide and BLS (Basic Life Support) into its portfolio of procedures. The information was released by the general director of this specialized healthcare center located in Cartagena, Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys.
The new procedure will be available starting this April at the clinic’s facilities, thanks to the acquisition of the equipment. The launch of this new technology reiterates the commitment of Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys and Sonrisa Perfecta Dental to the latest dental advances.
High-level training
In order to take full advantage of the potential of this novel procedure, Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys has participated in a training program. To do so, the best Colombian dentist attended a highly specialized course held at the Universidad del Bosque, in Bogotá. The activity provided theoretical and practical knowledge on the effective and safe management of this sedation.
There, Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys assimilated important information on the basic components of inhaled sedation equipment. She also learned about the function of each of these components, advantages, disadvantages, indications and contraindications, prevention of complications and use in the office.
In this course, Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys analyzed the implications and medical possibilities that open up with this new sedation method. Together with colleagues from all over the country, she exchanged information on the experiences that have been had in other nations where this procedure is already being used.
After proving her skills in the application of inhaled sedation with nitrous oxide and BLS, Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys received a certificate. This new endorsement was given to her by the American Heart Association (AHA), which is the highest authority worldwide regarding this new technology.
What is nitrous oxide
Nitrous oxide is a gas composed of a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, the inhalation of which reduces the feeling of stress in the patient. It has an anesthetic and anxiolytic effect, as well as being completely harmless to people. The patient inhales it through a mask that the specialist places over the nose and mouth or just over the nose.
Within a few minutes, it causes a feeling of relaxation and tranquility that allows the patient to have a good experience in the dental procedure. Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys indicates that in some patients, gas inhalation generates tingling sensations in the extremities, slight dizziness or a slight intoxication. However, these symptoms are temporary.
Advantages of inhaled sedation with nitrous oxide
Due to its effects, inhaled sedation with nitrous oxide is a quick and simple solution for the odontophobia suffered by people of any age. With a single application, it reduces the patient’s stress and anxiety levels considerably and without side effects.
With the patient calmer, the dentist and specialist can work more calmly, which translates into better and safer treatments. In turn, a more comfortable procedure for those involved translates into better final results, especially when it comes to complex interventions.
This type of sedation is a completely safe alternative and this has been proven by analyses carried out in laboratories around the world. Another advantage mentioned by Dr. Loayza Roys is that it does not leave a hangover sensation that other anesthetic methods do. This occurs because the gas is expelled from the body when breathing without the mask and no trace is left in the blood.
Cases in which the new sedation will be applied
Inhaled sedation with nitrous oxide can be applied in dental treatments of longer duration. At the Sonrisa Perfecta Dental spa-type clinic, it will be used for tooth extraction procedures, complete periodontics or highly complex endodontics. Its use will also be relevant when the patient requests it in cases of more routine treatments.
Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys mentions, for example, cases of deep dental cleaning, prophylaxis, fillings and periodontal treatments. The most important thing, says the best dentist in Colombia, is the well-being of the patient. Due to its safety, this type of sedation can be used on all types of people from 4 years of age.
