What if your mouth was like your computer mouse?

The latest developments in electronics never stop and now one of the most significant is a mouse-type device that is controlled from your mouth! The prototype was presented at the latest edition of the Consumer Electronics Show held in the United States just a few weeks ago.

It is a very sensitive and highly intuitive hands-free device that allows people to control the functions of computers, tablets and cell phones. This novel invention was developed by the technology company Augmental and designed for people with some type of limitation to interact with touch screens.

This is how the new mouse-type device MouthPad^ works

The new device from the company Augmental is called MouthPad^ and its developers promise that its operation is very simple. The device is placed on the palate and around the upper teeth. Its shape is similar to that of a retainer or mouth guard to treat problems such as bad occlusion or bruxism.

Once in place, a sensor inside the mouse-like device detects tongue movements and will perform actions that the user tells it to. It is connected via Bluetooth® to the device of the user’s choice and will translate tongue and head movements into actions on the screen. By translating gestures and movements, the user will no longer need their fingers to use their mobile or desktop devices.

Redefining digital interaction

MouthPad^ promises, among other things, a redefinition of digital interaction, as it opens up this possibility to a large number of people with physical disabilities. The manufacture of this new electronic device is completely customized. Its design is based on a digital scan of the person’s oral cavity.

This guarantees efficient operation, maximum comfort and intuitive performance, based on the tastes and usual needs of each user. The customized design and ultra-thin structure eliminates the fear of collateral problems in speech or breathing. It also does not interfere with eating, as it is designed to be placed and removed according to the activity that the user is going to perform.

In other words, the mouse-type device can be easily removed when eating or washing your mouth. It can also be removed to enjoy your sleep without any problems. Isn’t that great? Most importantly, it is a component that will allow many people with physical disabilities to join the workforce. It will also provide this segment of the population with greater autonomy to study, communicate, access banking services or official procedures.

Much of the ground has been gained

For Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys, much of the ground for the implementation of this device in Colombia has already been gained. She refers to the personalized design of the terminal with the digital scanning of the user’s oral cavity. For years, the Sonrisa Perfecta Dental spa-type clinic has been applying this technology for several of its dental treatments.

Known as the best dentist in Colombia, the director of the only spa-type clinic in Latin America explained what these treatments are. For example, the use of the digital intraoral camera is common when an accurate diagnosis of a patient’s condition is needed. The latest generation 3D scanner is also used for the design of fixed prostheses (dental implants) and veneers.

This technology is also vital for the design of removable prostheses such as bridges, retainers, mouth guards and orthodontic appliances. This is because the information provided by the digital scan is reliable and millimetrically precise. For this reason, the resulting designs adapt perfectly and ergonomically to each patient’s mouth. Dr. Tarsys Loayza Roys praised that this new product allows countless people to have greater autonomy to interact with the digital world.
